What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 people perished and over 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
