A large-scale search and recovery mission is actively in progress in the Caribbean region for a duo of lost sailboats carrying humanitarian supplies journeying from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Military Search Efforts Launched

Mexico has sent navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting no fewer than nine total personnel, as stated by a official statement.

The boats had been scheduled to arrive in Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their docking, the navy said.

Background of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

Cuba has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation struggles through repeated national electricity failures.

"The skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are fitted with proper safety equipment and signalling equipment," a representative involved in the effort stated.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their consular staff.

"The group is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Earlier Humanitarian Shipment

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received a separate vessel that had delivered a significant amount of relief supplies to the nation.

That boat, called "a new Granma" after the yacht in which Castro came back to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, medicines, infant formula, bicycles and foodstuffs.

Larger Political Backdrop

Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded initiatives to deliver essential supplies to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation came into effect.

Global bodies have since warned of "dire" lack of essential goods, with over 50,000 surgical procedures called off in Cuba amid power shortages.

Foreign policy pressure have increased over the past months, with remarks from different representatives underscoring the delicate situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Responding to recent statements, a senior official from Cuba insisted that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that initial phases of negotiations were initiated, although their current progress remains uncertain.

The naval forces said it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to discover the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the crews.

At this time, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
