The original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed how parent company Unilever stopped the introduction for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that established the business alongside his partner, disclosed how he plans to personally create this new product within a personal series showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.
This latest development escalates the ongoing conflict between the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders have asserted that Unilever and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Mr. Cohen announced via an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions regarding naming options plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen commented from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has become an emblem for solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, which match those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company transferring their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.
This upcoming product line is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally established in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
The founder revealed how he will develop other ice cream flavors that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, following decades of involvement, citing concerns that its independence was compromised following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen commented how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
