In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
