So, how was the past year in your home? Was it entirely positive as one might claim on online? Packed with top marks for the kids and riotous themed fancy dress birthday parties for the parents? Or perhaps it was a swamp of disappointment with only sporadic fun highlights? Is any of this actually real, or is everyone now digitally altered AI slop beings with celebrity dental work?
I have gathered my thoughts together, whether they wanted to or not, to discuss the crucial thing in a calendar year: which video games we played the most. Without further ado:
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Why can't you pick just one?"
"It’s not my personal ranking."
In the mobile realm, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "searching for adequate healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In the actual world."
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He was offended that I even asked. Fair enough.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into theatre school, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was playing Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where the Shark has a blooming utopia with significantly better healthcare than her eldest sister has in the real world.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and finished the year at 82%. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Minecraft
Any time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a relentless heckler. When he complains, I reply that I am engaging in this to build character so he can mature and play games for adults. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is a machine. Even better than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted strategy wizard’s poker, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you have a moment of clarity and realise it is all just an attempt to suck you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a legendary franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could dispatch my problems so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just lacked the time or headspace to give it what it needed earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I aim to experience this in the early morning after family time.
Balatro
I know Balatro was 2024’s surprise hit, but I was late to it. And it is exceptional. It just gets every single thing right. Its gameplay loop is a wonderful concept, but the powers behind the different special cards are so inventive it has become a game I could play any time. Add in the charm of the card design, and this is an definite high-water mark of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a bit of backlash when I critiqued how a technical issue in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I appreciated even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the individual who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I share that as written, because I appreciate the effort, and they are obviously an excellent judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Fine. Give me a brutally difficult exploration-focused thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". Great fun. I get that it looks ace and is ideal if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my mid-fifties. I was around back when many games were like this, and I'm over it. It was fine when I was a kid, but so was many less comfortable things.
Close call between business deals that sparked debate, and high launch costs. Both morally indefensible and concerning.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names called from the garden at tea time.
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or endless scrolling, but it is sore like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the day.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the heat death of the universe.
The Witcher 4.
