A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation struggling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Police said the forty-year-old presenter was approached by three suspects, with one began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The reason behind the incident has not been established and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, police said.

The Fatal Incident

Law enforcement revealed that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a premises in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the site managing the implementation of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by unknown people, it was reported.

"The report indicates the man was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before escaping on foot," a police statement said.

CCTV footage showed a man with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what looked like a protective services outfit shooting on Stock before running away.

The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but collapsed a short distance away.

Police added that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the assault.

Important clues, like spent shells, were found at the scene.

Investigation Ongoing

Officials are asking eyewitnesses who may have seen the suspects to assist with the investigation.

"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the attack, and police have been attempting to locate them to find their destination," stated a police chief.

Outpouring of Grief

His family member, Nicole Stock, expressed the relatives are devastated to come to terms with the loss.

"Words fail me. I don't have words," she stated.
"We know he was a champion for numerous individuals. He spoke out bravely about issues not many people were willing to discuss. This is a profound tragedy."

She urged the public to avoid sharing graphic images from the scene, noting this was an incredibly difficult time, particularly for Stock's young family.

Life Beyond the Decks

Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that aired on a popular local TV network.

Beyond his media career, Stock was involved in various entrepreneurial pursuits, including security provision, providing high-level security services and protecting prestigious gatherings across South Africa.

He was also reportedly involved in property management and participated in tenant removals.

Condolences Pour In

His death has shocked the country and triggered an outpouring of tributes from his audience, the government and political parties.

A government minister remarked he was angry and saddened by Stock's untimely death.

"He expressed his views boldly and honestly. He even criticized me and my actions as a public official. He was a true embodiment of who we must aspire to be," he stated.

A party figurehead commented the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".

A broadcasting director noted that "DJ Warras was more than just a TV personality. He was a talented storyteller, a passionate music lover and a generous spirit who brought happiness and vitality to every moment on screen. His artistic passion left an lasting impression."

In a communication, the broadcaster he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his magnetism, approachability and intelligent commentary, adding that his legacy "will be remembered".

Context of Crime
