New York Introduces Online Platform for Residents to Report ICE Images Following Detentions of 4 American Citizens

The state AG has introduced a new reporting form encouraging residents to provide photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement around the state. This move follows a day after a high-profile ICE raid disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, triggering widespread outcry.

US Citizens Held During Enforcement Action

A congressional representative announced during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were detained and detained for "nearly 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Rallies occurred in New York on consecutive evenings.

"All New York residents deserves to live without fear," state officials declared in a statement.

"For those who saw and documented ICE activity during the raid, I ask you to submit that footage with my office. We are committed to reviewing these accounts and investigating any wrongdoings."

Form Details

The platform offers options to upload photos and videos of the operation, as well as a field to specify where it occurred. Before submitting, users must mark a box that confirms that "authorities might employ any materials, images, or footage in a public document, including in a legal proceeding or government document."

Information about the Manhattan Operation

The Chinatown raid, which observers say involved dozens of government officers, took place in a well-known area of NYC where imitation handbags, accessories, jewelry and merchandise are sold daily in large quantities – frequently to sightseers.

Videos of Tuesday's raid show multiple covered and weaponized officers restraining and arresting a person, and shoving away witnesses. Throngs of New Yorkers trailed the personnel along the roads. An armored truck was also seen rolling through the city streets.

Official Reactions

In a news conference held with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, said that four nationals were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be taken for without cause." He noted the persons were freed on Wednesday with no legal action taken.

"There's a clear purpose here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman remarked. "This represents a armed campaign to incite tension. It is purely a excuse to generate turmoil for the government to bring in the armed forces to prevent unrest that they have created."

Extensive Outcry

Outrage over the immigration operation quickly spread – all three political contenders denounced the raid, including Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Once again, the current administration selects authoritarian theatrics that instill panic, instead of protection. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate wrote.

The city's advocacy organizations expressed outrage as well.

"Immigration agents raided Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, hooded officers and tactical gear to go after local sellers working to survive. This raid had nothing to do with public safety and everything to do with frightening communities and areas," stated the leader of a major immigrant coalition.

Agency Rules

Agency rules forbids the detention of US citizens and the agency has stated it does not take into custody American nationals. Yet, investigative journalism has revealed that more than 170 US citizens have been taken illegally by immigration authorities since the start of the present government.

Current Situation

ICE raids have been rising in frequency in New York and across the US recently.

A recent action in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the current administration. Demonstrations opposing ICE are ubiquitous including claims of aggression and inhumane treatment.

Latest, a document submitted by legal entities claimed inadequate care of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
