Agencies in Tasmania are working to identify a rosy sludge that has materialized on a isolated coast, with a number of researchers concerned it could be an algae outbreak.
The rosy-colored ooze materialized across a stretch of a coastal area about 60 kilometers south of the capital. A like substance has also been recorded on parts of another local beach and a separate bay.
Samples have been taken and submitted to the Environment Protection Authority for analysis. A spokesperson remarked that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural occurrence in response to changes in food sources, warmth, precipitation or sunlight".
"These blooms are sometimes called red or pink tides because the blooms can turn the water crimson," the representative noted. "Only some phytoplankton events are dangerous, with several kinds serving as a primary source of nourishment for animals in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The most common cause of reddish water in these seas is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause bioluminescent light displays at night."
Algal blooms are natural events but their occurrence has risen in recent times, in part due to environmental shifts and environmental waste that join together to create food-loaded oceans ideal for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a phytoplankton species that typically serve as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a bloom, there is a fast increase in their numbers that disrupts the healthy balance of ecosystems.
These phenomena have been compared to underwater bushfires and can persist in growing as long as the environment is suitable. In worse situations, vulnerable aquatic environments can be wiped out as aquatic animals is eliminated or suffocated, supplying more minerals for the outbreak.
A southern state recently grappled with a severe algae outbreak along its southern shore after a string of sea temperature spikes, which expanded across thousands of square kilometres. The bloom left beachgoers with eye irritation and severe coughing and may have eliminated up to numerous aquatic species across hundreds of species, according to official estimates.
A marine expert, who was involved in studying the beginning of the previous algal bloom said, based on images of the current situation, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a kind of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"There have been numerous of these events around Tassie of late," she added.
The scientist stated sea sparkle did not produce poisons comparable to the species involved in South Australia's devastating outbreak, but it does eat microscopic animals and "numerous fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were most at risk.
"You usually see a proliferation of this algae after a proliferation of something else, or for example a marine breeding," she added.
A campaigner, who collected samples of the rosy slime in Tasmania, stated it seemed the suspected bloom had "grown significantly" and suggested the salmon farming industry was the probable cause, citing comparable events elsewhere.
"Thus Tasmania needs to issue a strong warning here, the authorities and the environmental agency need to react to this. We need to analyse the specimens we've gathered and we need to inform the public here," she stated.
She stated she had concerns for public safety after experiencing a prickling feeling along her body while being sprayed with affected seawater.
An advocacy organization has reported lifeless animals and expired organisms washing ashore, with a prominent conservationist describing the circumstances as an "natural disaster" and urging the local leader to visit and "assume command the reaction that authorities must be undertaking".
"The leader needs to realize this is a disaster in the unfolding, commercially as well as for nature."
Talking with journalists, the leader stated he was uninformed of any relationships between the algal bloom and the farming business, saying scientific testing was needed before judgments could be reached.
"We must make certain our waterways are environmentally safe and sustainable," he said.
"Numerous shorelines across the island are our resources and we need to make sure the people and our economy can coexist to utilize our seas efficiently and in a lasting way."
