Leeds boss Daniel Farke felt Man City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma simulated an injury during the second period of their top-flight clash
Leeds manager Daniel Farke claimed Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma of simulating a knock to "bend the rules" during their top-flight fixture at Etihad Stadium
The visitors made the worst possible start with Phil Foden finding the net inside the opening 60 seconds, before Josko Gvardiol doubled the home side's lead before the interval
However, the visitors rallied after the break after a adjustment of tactics and formation, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin netting immediately after the resumption
And with Manchester City visibly struggling to cope with the adjustments just before Lukas Nmecha equalized, home keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma went down to get treatment, allowing manager Pep Guardiola to summon his players to the touchline and deliver new directions during the two minutes the game was stopped for
"Everyone understands why he went down," Farke commented
"It is not the elephant in the room. Why he fell it was clear. It is within the bounds of the regulations. It is clever. If I approve? If it's within the spirit of fair play? If it ought to be like this I will reserve to myself. It is up to the governing bodies to find a resolution"
"I ask the assistant referee at this point if you want to take action. Our options are limited"
"Unless we educate our players in the game what to do in terms of fair play and fair play and whatever and if we simply attempt to bend the rules and actually do a fake injury in an attempt to do an additional team talk, it is not what I like personally. But if it is allowed by the rules I have no grounds for complaint"
Foden's injury-time winner sent Leeds to a sixth consecutive loss in seven top-flight fixtures to place them 18th in the division, with only bottom club Wolverhampton having scored fewer Premier League goals this term
However, Farke, who has been questioned for a lack of boldness particularly around changes, was nearly rewarded for a courageous choice at the half-time that nearly reversed their situation
Talking to BBC Match of the Day, Foden, said that his team were only able to regroup after Pep Guardiola's touchline conference with his players
"During the break we were in control. Second half they came out, pressed us a lot higher, they deployed a pair in attack and altered the formation a bit," commented Phil Foden
"We really had difficulty to gain control of the game. We assembled on the edge of the field and adjusted a couple of aspects and it improved from there. That little break was vital to make corrections"
The last time Leeds United suffered four straight consecutive Premier League games was in 2022-23, when their campaign ended with demotion
However, while Daniel Farke said that "our overriding feeling is disappointment", their second-half display offered enough evidence to indicate they are able of arresting their present form and moving back up the standings
"Displaying such a performance should give us plenty of belief. If we demonstrate such spirit and unity we have a great opportunity to earn the points," the manager continued
"We possessed the confidence before the match, during the game and after the game. Otherwise you cannot respond with a showing like that. We have great unity and determination in the locker room"
Commenting on radio analysis, ex- Scottish club attacker Chris Sutton remarked: "Everybody anticipated it to be a comfortable win for City, but it has been anything but comfortable in this second period"
"Leeds can take a lot from this display with the way they have performed in this second period"
"Following that were Daniel Farke's changes, who is frequently criticised for not being as responsive as he should be. Dominic Calvert-Lewin came on and roughed up the City centre-backs"
"It appeared like it could be a huge pivotal moment in Leeds' campaign, but City discovered a measure of quality. They escaped with one this afternoon"
