The California governor, a prominent Democratic figure, has indicated that he will make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 elections conclude.
"Yeah, I would be lying otherwise," the governor stated when questioned about seriously considering a campaign for president after the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
The governor's time in office as governor wraps up in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he noted that any determination is still years away.
"It's up to destiny," he said.
The California governor has emerged as a prominent opponent of the Trump administration, leveraging his social media accounts and advocating for a proposition that would increase the party's congressional seats in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This move has invited attacks from adversaries.
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a recent appearance on a major news network. Duffy revealed plans to pull federal funds from the state and suggested suspending the state's ability to provide trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut $160m from California," he said, after a recently reported tragic collision in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that caused three deaths and injured individuals.
The governor's team pointed out that the U.S. government had reauthorized the worker's status multiple times, which allowed him to obtain a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
Duffy had before announced he was withholding $40m from California for not enforcing linguistic standards for CDL holders.
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand federal law," the governor's team responded in a previous release countering the funding warnings. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: The state's truck drivers had a accident mortality rate much lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
A this month's study found that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that the governor must consider running for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of a third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has fallen from an mean of more than 40% to current figures.
Earlier this year, the governor remarked while on a trip several swing states that he had "no idea" about his plans for 2028.
He also referenced his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.
"The idea that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, amazing," he commented. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the American people."
