Fury Erupts as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Rebuke

Personalities from across the partisan aisle and the entertainment world are coming together to condemn former President Donald Trump for his statements following the tragic deaths of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Online Statement

Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to social media to describe the late director as "tortured and struggling". The post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Law Enforcement Developments and Detention

Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was established at a significant sum.

A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's words was swift and scathing.

This is a vile and vile statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the statements. She pointed to prior comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any lower?"

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a disturbed man."

Echoing this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they opposed him. So sick."

Criticism from His Own Party

Some GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.

Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared members in his political party to justify the comments.

Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.

"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."

Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally following the shooting of another individual.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
