Reports surfaced of several blasts and the noise of low-flying aircraft in the Venezuelan capital in the early hours of the weekend. This situation has led to accusations from Venezuela's leadership and demands for global scrutiny.
Venezuela's socialist government has condemned the US of committing "imperialist aggression," stating that ex- President Trump supposedly ordered military strikes against the Latin American nation. In an formal declaration, the government stated that strikes had targeted Caracas and three other states: Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua.
"The sole aim of these strikes is to seize control of our nation's strategic resources, in particular its oil and resources," the government declared.
The government called on the world to condemn the actions, which it labeled a "clear infringement of international law" that placed millions of civilians in peril.
Locals reported hearing at least several explosions around 2:00 AM local time. People in several districts reportedly ran into the open.

Smoke was observed pouring from major defense sites in Caracas: the La Carlota airbase air base and the Fuerte Tiuna army base, where president Nicolás Maduro is reported to reside.

The Colombian government, which just joined the UNSC, said it would initiate security plans at its border with its neighbor.
These alleged strikes follow a prolonged pressure campaign by the US against the Venezuelan regime. Since last summer, there has been a substantial US military deployment off Venezuela's Caribbean coast and a series of airstrikes on ships suspected of drug trafficking.
Venezuela's administration has stated "a state of external disturbance" and ordered all national defense protocols to be activated. It has also urged its political forces to mobilize and "denounce this foreign act."
US authorities and the Defense Department have not promptly responded to requests for comment regarding the events.
