Bushfires Engulf Western Australia as Thermal Readings Skyrocket

Extreme heat and raging bushfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. With mercury levels forecast to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across much of the south-west.

These conditions come after this month's fires in New South Wales, which resulted in the loss of homes and loss of life. Intense heat alerts have also been activated for later this week in parts of SA and NSW, as a system of atmospheric pressure shifts eastward, delivering intense heat to much of the region.

The combination of extremely dry land and relentless high temperatures creates a dangerous scenario for firefighters.

Global Weather Extremes Trigger Chaos

Elsewhere, a major city was plunged into darkness last week after powerful winds damaged the urban power grid, with falling trees knocking out power lines. The stormy weather also caused significant travel disruption at a major airport, where numerous air services were grounded. Substantial damage to power systems is expected to cause ongoing problems as service providers scramble to restore power to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Unusual Fog Covers Typically Clear Area

At the same time, a valley known for its sunny weather and plentiful sunlight has endured one of its dullest and most overcast periods on recorded history. A specific type of fog, which typically lasts for only a short time, has been remarkably widespread and long-lasting this year, holding temperatures at a major airport below 8C for over a week – the most prolonged period in over three decades. The extended fog has been fuelled by unprecedented autumn rainfall that left the ground saturated.

Severe Weather Delivers Wintry Weather to Holiday Destination

And in another country, a powerful storm has brought intense rain, strong gales and even snowfall to a group of islands – conditions many would not connect with this favored tourist spot. While wintry precipitation is not unheard of at elevated areas, the storm delivered some of the heaviest accumulations in 2016 to a protected area, compelling its closure.

In addition to the snowfall, strong winds from the north buffeted the island chain, with wind gusts exceeding 50mph observed on several islands. The influence of the weather event is forecast to ease this week with more seasonal weather taking hold.
