Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
