A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the flight.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
