Arrangements for Putin-Trump Meeting Postponed Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Talks Suggested

There are "no arrangements" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a White House official has stated.

Recently Trump said he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital soon to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was no longer "needed".

The administration declined to provide any more details on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Earlier Events

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar indicating the president had pressured him to relinquish large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

Nevertheless, on Monday the American president embraced a truce plan backed by Ukraine and EU officials to pause the war on the current front line.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he remarked.

Russia has frequently resisted against pausing the current line of contact.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Lavrov stated on this week, suggesting that freezing the front line would only amount to a brief pause.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the hostilities demanded attention, Lavrov stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of extensive requirements that involve the acceptance of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president commented discussions about the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently preceded reports that the US was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike Russian territory.

Zelensky said it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the missiles had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he remarked.
