Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
Price's death comes shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
