During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
