A Special Release Pikachu Promo Aims to Be Super Effective On Speculators

Marking the arrival of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique collaboration has been formed. Pokémon's creators alongside the Natural History Museum are opening a pop-up shop stocked with exclusive merchandise. Fans will find offerings including plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies all drawing from the museum's theme. For collectors, though, is a specially made Pikachu card, offered as a gift with purchase for the pop-up. The store will operate from the physical location to its web counterpart from January 26 to April 19.

The Book That Inspires the Partnership

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a highly anticipated volume packed with beautiful artwork depicting Pokémon in their wild environments. It's essentially is the kind of research a Pokémon Professor could produce once adventurers provide field notes, or a naturalist's journal might have created if the Galapagos were populated by Pidgeys instead of finches. Part of the charm stems from the book's serious approach, presenting Pokémon as worthy of subject for study. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara together with illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita each possess doctorate degrees in animal behavior and ecology.

Why This Special Card Different

The company regularly for The Pokémon Company special edition cards celebrating big events or brand collaborations. A lot such promotional cards often feature the famous electric rodent who serves as the series face. The factor setting this latest promotion apart is its unusually large dimensions. While precise specs were not publicly disclosed, availability will certainly be strictly limited, and fans limited to just one card per purchase.

Limiting Speculator Interest

According to a company announcement, a portion of the merchandise will also be sold beyond the institution itself. However, broader availability will only be specific stores in the UK. Critically, fans will not be able to acquire this promo via the online Pokémon Center. Although reseller interest is inevitable, the setup suggests they will have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities this time around. If you're feeling left out, consider an alternative like fossil-themed display coming to Chicago later this year.

"Every penny of sales from the Museum shop and its web shop, including Pokémon products, support the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. This includes the efforts of 400 scientists who are conducting studies to discover answers to the global ecological crisis," the statement says.
