Although not quite at the same level as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “6-7” – originating from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Every time, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
